Captain Dick has retired the Yacht Wanderlust.
Since 2005 there have been major changes in the international codes for commercial vessels. Some of the code changes, particularly those pertaining to crew licensing and equipment have made it virtually impossible for vessels in Wanderlust’s price range to operate profitably carrying twelve or more guests. Increased operating costs due to the new regulations and two years of recession without any improvement on the horizon caused us in August of 2009 to withdraw Wanderlust from the charter yacht fleet.
I also had some health issues to deal with that I'd been putting off for years. Skin cancers been a way of life for me for the last 20 years and in the last several years it had become more of a problem. It's pretty hard to run a charter boat and at the same time keep out of the sun as much as possible. A couple of other surgeries have put my body back in good operating condition and I should be good for at least another twenty or thirty years. I'll be turning 71 in January, where did the years all go.
Discontinuing charter operations was one of the most difficult decisions of my professional career. Chartering Wanderlust had been a way of life for me for over thirty years in the Caribbean and my list of best friends is predominantly former charter guests. The good news is I've been able to spend some quality time with my family over the last year and I got to welcome my first grandson into the world about a year ago.
I’ve I spent almost 50 years building and chartering Wanderlust and I hope to be able to continue to maintain her and enjoy sailing with my friends and family for many years to come. The last two years we were chartering our business was off about fifty percent. I had to keep the crew busy during down time so Wanderlust received an awful lot of tender loving care. She's looking better than ever however my cash reserves took a major hit so even though Wanderlust is retired I'm not.
